The most common mistake here is repeating the Results chapter. Your committee already knows what the numbers are; now they want to know what they mean in the context of your original Basis of Critique. A professional Discussion chapter returns to the Theoretical Framework you established in Chapter 1. If your results don't align with the theory, you must explain why. This is where you address the "nuanced point of view." Perhaps the theory was limited, or perhaps the site-specific stakeholders influenced the outcome in a way the theory didn't predict.

The discussion that reports only alignment between findings and theory has told the committee that the theory survived contact with the data, which is useful but not surprising. The discussion that accounts for misalignment—that identifies where the theory's predictions did not hold, interrogates why, and considers what that gap reveals about the theory's limits or the site's particular conditions—has told the committee something the field did not previously know. That is the contribution. Not the confirmation of what was already suspected, but the precise, honest account of where the map did not match the territory and what that discrepancy means for the scholars who will draw the next map. The intellectual friction between results and existing literature is not a problem to be managed. It is the finding inside the finding—and the Discussion chapter exists to bring it into the light.
